META vs ALT v Emacs

Zdravim,
mam mensi problem s Emacscem. Nebere mi totiz klavasu ALT ve zkratkach typu
M-... Ta verze s ESC-.. funguje, ale nepripadne mi to jako nejlepsi reseni.
Jde nekde nastavit, aby mi to bralo klavesu ALT jako META??

s linuxem zacinam, takze pokud to jde, ocenil bych kdyby to bylo celkem
polopate..
